Meet Deb Agnew

Founder,

Fork in the Road Wellness

Strategic Psychotherapist

Clinical Hypnotherapist

BSc Psych | Dip Psychoth | Dip Hyp

Hi, I’m Deb.

I believe in the extraordinary potential within each of us to heal, grow and change throughout our lives.

A difficult time with your health or wellbeing can leave you feeling frightened, overwhelmed or unsure of what comes next. But it can also become a turning point.

A moment when another way forward becomes possible. When you discover strengths and resources within yourself you may not have known were there. And when you begin to believe that you really can feel better.

With greater understanding, new skills and the right therapeutic support, we can learn to think, feel and respond differently, often discovering capacities within ourselves we never knew we had.

That’s the philosophy behind Fork in the Road Wellness.

MY APPROACH IS SHAPED BY BOTH TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

I’m a qualified Solution-Focused Strategic Psychotherapist and Clinical Hypnotherapist, with advanced training from the Institute of Applied Psychology in Sydney.

I also hold a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Canada’s esteemed McGill University, internationally recognised for its leadership and contribution to psychology, neuroscience and mental health research.

For more than six years, I’ve worked at the Black Dog Institute, a world-leading mental health research institute renowned for its work in the prevention, treatment and management of mental illness. Working alongside psychologists, researchers and mental health professionals has given me extensive exposure to evidence-based approaches to mental health, including anxiety, stress and burnout.

Why I started Fork in the Road Wellness

Fork in the Road Wellness grew from both my professional and lived experience, and from seeing a gap I believe deserves far more attention.

When something changes with our health, treating the physical problem is essential. But there is often so much more going on. Fear, anxiety, stress, pain, uncertainty, changes to the way we live, and the emotional and psychological impact of suddenly finding ourselves somewhere we never expected to be.

At the same time, GPs are balancing enormous demands in short appointments and the need for mental health support continues to grow.

There is an important space between physical healthcare and traditional mental health support that can be easily overlooked.

It is the mental, emotional and behavioural side of health. How we think. How we cope. How we respond to stress and uncertainty. The habits and patterns we fall back on. And our ability to make and sustain the lifestyle changes our health may now require.

That is the space I created Fork in the Road Wellness to work in.

Health challenges I can help with

People come to me with many different health concerns and life circumstances, including chronic pain and back pain, cancer, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, obesity and emotional eating, menopause, migraines, IBS and other chronic or ongoing health conditions.

Others come because anxiety, prolonged stress or burnout has itself become the turning point.

The health issue may be different, but my area of specialisation remains the same: the mental, emotional and behavioural side of health.

I use Strategic Psychotherapy, Clinical Hypnotherapy and evidence-informed mind-body approaches to help you understand what’s happening, develop new skills and disrupt patterns of thinking, feeling, coping and behaving that may no longer be serving you.

The aim is not to replace medical treatment or treat the underlying disease. It’s to work alongside your healthcare, focusing on the areas where psychological and behavioural change can make a meaningful difference.

So you can feel better.

Take back control of your life.

And feel hopeful about what comes next.

A professional with a deeply personal understanding

I know what it’s like. I’ve been there too.

To feel like something isn’t right with your health and not have clear answers. To be managing a diagnosis, ongoing symptoms or a condition that isn’t improving the way you hoped.

I understand the frustration and exhaustion that comes with doing everything you can. Trying to eat better. Manage stress. Move more. And still not getting the results you need.

I also know what it’s like to feel passed from one specialist to another without real answers. To feel unheard. Or left to figure it out on your own.

And I know how difficult it can be to genuinely want to change, know what you need to do, and still find yourself falling back into old patterns and self-sabotaging behaviours.

Some of the health turning points I’ve navigated myself include:

  • Reversing pre-diabetes, overcoming emotional eating and self-sabotaging patterns, losing weight, and creating a more sustainable and nourishing relationship with food.
  • Managing a degenerative back condition and chronic pain while rebuilding strength, mobility and confidence in daily life.
  • Recovering from burnout after prolonged stress, including a period of severe, persistent migraines.
  • Navigating diverticulitis, gut and microbiome issues, and making significant changes to my nutrition and lifestyle to support long-term health.

These experiences shape how I work.

Not because your experience will be the same as mine. But because I understand what it can feel like when your health changes your life and how much more is involved in getting better than simply knowing what you’re supposed to do.
